dear friends,.

much of what we do on a daily basis is routine and of no particular, earth-shaking importance.

however, after reviewing letters of family going back to wwii, it is fascinating to read what dad was doing on board the aircraft carrier in the pacific on any old day, what mom was cooking on her ever-steaming range, how i was dealing with the roller coaster of emotion at bethel [mom saved all my letters], how nana wrote that she would not study with the witnesses [per my request] but 'here are some mittens i knitted for you when you canvass new york with your magazines.

Stayed at a bed and breakfast for two nights first time it was very interesting. The place was filled with antiques and it makes you nervous that you'll knock something over and break it. We stayed in the washington room and there were so many washingtons that it felt like they were appearing out of nowhere. It was like every imaginable george Washington item filled every inch of space and it took awhile to even notice them all. the innkeeper was a bit of a fuddy duddy type but very nice and prepared an excellent breakfast both mornings.

Daily walks with my new dog

since i'm home by myself i got a shelter dog to keep me company.

her name is samus and she is a poodle mix about 4 yrs old.

she has to be walked at least 2x a day.

Just "discovered" sweet potatoes and yams

sweet potato was already an important crop on pacific islands when europeans landed on the islands: easter island (roggeveen, 1722), new zealand (cook, 1769), and the hawaiian islands (cook, 1778).

sweet potato, known as kumara, was a staple in the diet of the maoris of new zealand; interestingly, the name kumar is used for this plant in peru!

i am not a big fan of sweet potatoes maybe because my mother told me that when she was pregnant with me all she craved was sweet potatoes and she ate them like crazy the whole time. She ruined it for me in the womb.

better late than never to enlist the aid of my creative and intelligent friends!

nancy drew gave me a wonderful idea for my presentation on character development.

the character was enjoying an outdoor lunch when, out of nowhere, came the thunderous sweep of jet aircraft overhead.

You've taken my experience and made it crazy. It was a little unsettling but not terrifying the people around us we're into it and seemed to know what the next moves would be. i just don't like watching people do dangerous things but sometimes you get surprised and find yourself in attendance. Years ago I unsuspectingly if that's a word found myself at a karate demo which started out innocent enough untll a man with a huge samuri sword came out and he laid a man on a bench with a watermelon on his stomach and two women knelt down on each side holding cantalopes in their hands and the real surprise was that they then blindfolded the man with the sword and the room got real quiet and he proceeded to slice all the melons in half without killing the people. i really didn't need to see that for entertainment or whatever that was.

Saturday we went to the waterfront for lunch it seemed extra crowded and we thought it was just summer vacationers being new to the area we're still in the discovery mode. We found a place to eat nice view ordered drinks and lunch when suddenly the sky was full of loud roaring sounds. Apparently, it was a patriotic air show festival now I have never been to an air show not my thing kind of scary because sometimes they crash into the crowd and also i just don't like to watch people risk their lives for entertainment. I dislike circuses as well. Well there we were and a group call the blue angels were roaring by in formation doing what looked like jet wheelies and getting really close sideways. Sometimes they would fly straight up and look like they were still then go straight down like they were going to crash. People were delighted and someone at another table said " oh watch this is were they fly at each other at top speed and don't crash" I thought I'm not sure I want to see this. It was spectacular but not something I want to see again.
